Spring Break Option

The Roanoke (VA) Times mentions the Appalachian Trail as an option for spring break in a short piece by Katy Allamong of Giles High School titled "Alternative Spring Break Destinations" in its 27 March 2007 issue.

All we get is in the second paragraph: "The more adventurous ones go to the Grand Canyon, skiing in Colorado, while some hike the Appalachian Trail."

By the way, since when do high school students go on trips like this -- or of any kind -- over their spring break?

I was offended when I saw the way this article was posted. I happen to know several people that take alternative spring breaks instead of going out and getting wasted. A couple of my close friends actually went and hiked parts of the trail over their spring break. This article was written to show that there are other things to do other than spend tons of money on a huge trip or on alcohol.

I'm not sure what the anonymous commenter's gripe is. And why inject the notion of "going out and getting wasted" - either doing it or not doing it???

My question at the end of the original blog post is simply asking when, why, how is it that high school students have the expendable income and time to take trips like these? Don't they have to save up for college? Don't they have part-time jobs they need to maintain? Don't they have studying to do, term papers to write, and so on?

Or does even daring to ask that make me a curmudgeon?
